School for Compassionate Action (SCA) 300 Hour Advanced Training

The School for Compassionate Action: Yoga & Meditation for Communities in Need is a non profit group of highly skilled yoga and meditation teachers, clinical psychologists, social workers and contemplative Buddhist psychotherapists. We provide trainings to those interested in teaching and classes for those who might directly benefit from the awareness practices of yoga and mindfulness meditation.

The SCA advanced teacher training is a collection of independent workshops, classes, mentoring, required study and reading, community gatherings, and hands-on internships working with the population of your choice. Our focus is on providing practical information and useful tools as they may apply to specific in-need/at-risk populations. Additionally, some of the weekends address the needs of the health care provider, or those who work in these given populations.
We are honored to be partnering with the Tibet House in presenting this leading edge program and are grateful for their support and backing of these new ideas and ways of bringing compassionate action into our local communities.

The Heart of the Program (Total hours: 108):
Each core weekend is comprised of a combination of or focus on the following areas:

• Yoga postures (specific to particular situations and populations – based on alignment, safety and effectiveness)

• Meditation practices ( including loving kindness/compassion practices, Vipassana and some Tibetan techniques)

• Contemplative practices

• Functional Anatomy and Kinesiology

• Contemporary and Buddhist psychology

• Teaching skills, communication skills, sequencing, tools for assisting and assessing the needs of others, skillful observation.

• Practices that help you to help yourself, so that you are actually able to continue helping others

Additional workshops, classes, mentoring, required study and reading, community gatherings, internet community gatherings and internships with the population of your choice offer additional ways to add hours towards certification – all at your own pace and with your choice of concentration.

The core program dates:

2010

October 16-17
November 13-14
December 4-5

2011
January 22-23

(for workshop content, please go to the workshop page on this site)

Many weekend workshops will be open to the public and we welcome any one to join us. If you choose to participate in just a daylong or a full weekend workshop, please note that you are not eligible for a SCA 300 – Hour Advanced Certificate and attendance does not qualify you for participation in the full training. Only students who are accepted and registered in the full program will be able to participate in the internship and mentoring aspects of the training.

The core program workshops will be held at: The Tibet House, 22 West 15th Street (5th and 6th Avenues) NYC, 10011. 10 – 5 with a one-hour lunch break. All weekends must be attended to receive the 300 – hour certificate. If you are unable to attend a given weekend, you may put this in writing in advance, and we will give you alternatives if they are available.

Components of the Program:

Classes and Retreats
In addition to the core program, you will be asked to choose additional yoga and meditation classes, Buddhist meditation classes, workshops and/or retreats, submit homework assignments, home practice reports etc., to fulfill the 300 hours. We will work with you personally to develop the best way or you to do this.

Additional Classes and Workshops:

In addition to the core program, you can choose additional yoga/meditation classes, Buddhist meditation classes, workshops and or retreats to fulfill the 300 hours. Self study, home practice, reading and reports will also add towards the 300 hours.

We are at the Tibet House

We are honored to be partnering with the Tibet House in co-presenting our training and weekend workshops. Tibet House has generously extended a 10% discount for their programs (except for the Introduction to Meditation classes which are by donation) if you are registered in the full 300 hour training, package 2 or 3. Some of the programs offered by the Tibet House can be counted as hours towards the 300 – hour certification. If you live outside of NYC, you are welcome to add pre-approved classes and retreats to earn hours where you live.

Mentoring

Select teachers will be accepting a limited number of students to mentor. Mentoring sessions will be on the phone or in person, and must be pre-arranged with each teacher. Prices vary per teacher, and the cost for the mentoring is in addition to the core program.

Mentoring with one of our teachers is a way for you to have someone to check in with about your practices, studies and teaching. A mentorship is a very special way to ask the questions you have to someone who understands your interests and the path you’ve chosen to be on.

Mentors currently accepting students:

• Jill Satterfield MBT
• Miles Neale PsyD, LMHC
• Diana Slattery OTR/L
• Robin Boudette, PhD

To apply for mentorship, please submit your first and second choices of teacher with a detailed description about why you are interested a particular mentor. Please note: we may not be able to accept everyone who applies for a particular mentor, but know we will do our best!

Required study and reading

A full list of reading assignments will be given before the start of training. You will be asked to submit a written synopsis for each book you read.

Community gatherings

We believe that gathering together as a community is crucial in creating a supportive environment that will help each student expand to their fullest potential. This community – its support, understanding and empathy- will also be there for you later as you move into working with your chosen population – helping them to be with the tough realities they face every day, and helping you to be with what you are exposed to as well.

Additional Informal Gatherings and Pot Luck Dinners will be held in Ft. Greene Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Hands-on Internships

Interning is an excellent way to get hands on experience with the population of your choice and with teachers who have been working with the specific population for some time.

Once you are enrolled in the full 300 – hour training, and have attended 5 weekend workshops, you may apply for internship with the teacher and population of your choice. Please note: we will place you into an internship as soon as we can – some internships are more popular, and some populations are more vulnerable, not equip to have too many new people work with them in rapid succession. We are considerate of you and your desires, along with the people you will be working with and their capacity for change and trust.

We hold classes at the following venues in NYC:

Health and Wellness Action (Chronic Illness, Pain and Trauma):
• Gouverneur Healthcare, NYC
more to come

Youth Action:
• The DOME Project, Manhattan
• Center for Community Alternatives, Brooklyn
